  4. Lee Atwater battles a tumor

  7.     A political operative who specializes in bareknuckle
  8. campaigns, Lee Atwater is facing his roughest contest yet. The
  9. Republican National Committee chairman was hospitalized last
  10. week in Montefiore Medical Center in New York City for
  11. treatment of a brain tumor known as an upper-grade astrocytoma.
  12. Chief neurologist Dr. Paul Kornblith described it as "so
  13. aggressive, we had to go after it with hammer and tongs." Dr.
  14. William Shapiro of the Brain Tumor Cooperative Group, a
  15. nationwide research organization of neurosurgeons, estimates
  16. that Atwater, 39, has only a 10% chance of surviving more than
  17. five years.

  19.     Characteristically, Atwater is going all out against this
  20. latest adversary. He opted last week to undergo a specialized
  21. treatment, in which tubes containing massive doses of
  22. radioactive isotopes were implanted directly into the tumor in
  23. the right lobe of his brain. After five days, the tubes were
  24. removed, and Atwater was expected to return home this week. In
  25. three months, doctors will test the results.

  27.     The illness interrupted a string of personal pluses for a
  28. man who last year was appointed the second youngest R.N.C.
  29. chairman in the party's history. A first album of his
  30. blues-guitar music (Atwater's avocation) was released last
  31. week, and Atwater's wife Sally is expected to give birth to
  32. their third daughter this week.

  34.     Friends say Atwater speaks confidently of overcoming his
  35. illness and keeps in touch with the White House and the R.N.C.
  36. He grills doctors for highly technical information about the
  37. nature of his disease and his treatment. At the same time, he
  38. is following editor Norman Cousins' prescription that laughter
  39. is the best medicine. Atwater has watched videotapes of the
  40. Three Stooges and W.C. Fields' film Never Give a Sucker an Even
  41. Break. Black humor also helps: he presented some friends with
  42. copies of his new album and a souvenir tuft of his hair, which
  43. has been falling out from radiation treatments.

  45.     Atwater's illness comes at a critical time for his party.
  46. In elections this fall, the Republicans face 36 gubernatorial
  47. races and 34 Senate contests. Atwater had vowed he would be
  48. "brutal" about targeting congressional districts to reduce the
  49. Democrats' 82-seat House majority, but even he admits he has
  50. since lost his taste for hand-to-hand political combat.
